The New Zealand Government has announced 2 important immigration changes, both coming into effect on 18 August 2025:

1) More skilled trades added to the Green List

We welcome the announcement that the following 10 skilled trades occupations will be added to the Green List Work to Residence pathway. This visa pathway allows applicants to apply for residence after working in a Green List role for 24 months, provided they meet all requirements.

  • Metal Fabricator
  • Pressure Welder
  • Welder
  • Fitter (General)
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Fitter-Welder
  • Metal Machinist (First Class)
  • Panel Beater
  • Vehicle Painter
  • Paving Plant Operator

Wage requirements

One key detail in the announcement is the specific pay rate requirements for some of these roles, which appear to be above average for the current market:

  • For Metal Fabricator, Welder, Fitter, and Machinist roles, applicants must be paid at least $43.63 per hour (or $90,750 per year, based on a 40-hour week).
  • For Paving Plant Operators, Panel Beaters, and Vehicle Painters, applicants must earn at least $38.59 per hour (or $80,267 per year, based on a 40-hour week).

2) Increase to residence median wage

Immigration New Zealand will also raise the median wage threshold used for skilled residence visas. From 18 August 2025, the new rate will be $33.56 per hour.

This new rate will affect many Skilled Resident categories.

What this means for you

If you work in one of the newly added Green List roles, or employ someone who does, now is a great time to review residency options.
